Qatar Civil Aviation Authority Issues Updated Rules on Power Banks for Air Travel

QCAA updates rules on carrying power banks during air travel

The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) has announced new regulations governing the carriage of power banks containing lithium batteries on flights, aligning national procedures with the latest international safety standards issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The updated guidelines, released this week, stipulate that each passenger may carry a maximum of two power banks, with a capacity not exceeding 100 watt‑hours. Importantly, power banks must be transported in cabin baggage only and are strictly prohibited in checked luggage. The advisory also makes clear that in‑flight charging of power banks is not permitted, and terminals must be adequately protected to prevent damage or short circuits.

Officials stressed that power banks should remain readily accessible during the flight, rather than stored in overhead compartments or side lockers, to enable rapid crew response in case of emergencies. Travelers are also urged to check for any additional restrictions imposed by individual airlines before departure.

The QCAA emphasized that failure to comply with dangerous goods regulations or crew instructions could result in legal consequences, underscoring the seriousness of aviation safety protocols.

The announcement reflects Qatar’s commitment to maintaining strict compliance with international aviation standards and ensuring passenger safety. With the growing reliance on portable electronic devices, regulators are reinforcing measures to mitigate risks associated with lithium batteries, which are known to pose fire hazards if mishandled.

Passengers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the updated rules ahead of travel to avoid penalties or disruptions. The QCAA reiterated that these measures are designed to safeguard both passengers and crew, while ensuring smooth and secure operations across Qatar’s aviation sector.
